Write Your Way To Freedom founder Sarah Turner can teach ya how to earn $4,000 to $5,000 a month (or much more) writing copy for businesses you’re passionate about.
One of her students, Adri Kopp, worked as a zookeeper – of all things – for eight years before joining Sarah’s program. She was proud of that job and although it didn’t pay the best it did come with great benefits.
In the end though, she got sick of the long hours, red tape, and tedious tasks.
As fate would have it, the algorithm showed her one of Sarah’s ads.
She clicked, went through her funnel, checked out the mini course, and was pretty much obsessed from that point on.
“I was so drawn to this idea that I could be a well-paid writer,” Adri told Sarah in an interview.
“You know, and set my own hours and all these things. The autonomy was so attractive to me,” she continued.
“And yeah, I was obsessed and I knew I wanted to buy the course. So I did and I didn’t tell anybody; I didn’t want them to talk me out of it.”
Sarah chimes in, “That’s actually a really good point.”
“It’s not that I want you hiding this from anyone,” Sarah says, “but you do need to be careful who you tell what to. Because the people in our lives may want the best for us but they’re usually giving us fear-based advice based on their own personal experience or lack thereof.”
“Most people can’t appreciate the opportunities we have in today’s online world. The world has changed so much; it’s night and day from what you might’ve been able to achieve just a few years ago.”
Anyways.
Adri digs right in, but she never feels “ready,” so she just keeps consuming videos and consuming videos and consuming videos.
Her breakthrough came when she posted in the Write Your Way To Freedom private Facebook Group, asking if anyone wants an accountability buddy.
Two other girls took her up on it.
They met twice a week… to study, help one another out, and just make sure everyone was on track to meet their goals as new freelance copywriters.
Not that it was smooth sailing from there.
Adri suffered from comparison-itis, always wondering if the stuff she was writing was up to par.
She made the mistake of bartering: writing free copy for a graphic designer in exchange for a logo. No wonder Sarah says, never do this. They don’t appreciate it if they don’t have skin in the game, right?
Eventually she gets a referral from someone else in the group… in the sustainability niche… which was kinda perfect because it’s like zookeeper-adjacent.
So that was a win.
Then Adri followed Sarah’s cold email outreach strategy, batching 200+ emails and firing ’em off to dream clients.
Next thing ya know, she had a $6k month.
Adri has since niched down, branding herself as strictly an email copywriter.
She still gets asked to do everything under the sun – blog posts, sales pages, social media content – and sometimes she’ll say yes, for the right client, but email’s definitely gonna be her bread and butter moving forward.
Almost all of Adri’s clients are on retainer, which sounds good (predictable income each month, right?), but she actually wants more one-off projects.
With those, it’s easier to raise your price from one to the next.
Whereas, with retainers, you feel obligated to keep slaving away for that same monthly fee you both agreed to in the beginning.
Sounds like Adri’s averaging about $5k per month overall.
It’s a good case study because it’s real, it’s believable. It didn’t happen overnight.
